October 2025, Chile: The country’s new and innovative adoption legislation at the heart of an event on child identity and participation
The @Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile), @TransformAdopción, @GRISIJ and the @Universitat de Barcelona (Spain) recently held an online international seminar in the framework of the enactment of the new Law on Adoption in Chile. The country has made considerable efforts over the past years to continue strengthening its adoption system, in particular domestic adoption. With the enactment of the Law, a number of important issues, which are relevant to children’s identity rights, have been incorporated into legal provisions, including child participation, strengthened provisions on access to origins and post-adoption contact.
The event was followed by approximately 600 participants, and was also an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and opportunities currently emerging at global level in relation to the above elements of adoption, on the need to continue moving forward to safeguard the rights of adoptees and their families and on how Chile’s innovative approaches may comply with international principles and standards and therefore offer inspiration to other countries, in particular in the Latin American region.
CHIP is very grateful to @Irene Salvo Agoglia, who has greatly contributed to system strengthening in Chile, for the invitation to this event and for always welcoming CHIP’s contributions to discussions on children’ rights to identity.
