Expert meeting with CRC Committee on child’s right to identity and access to remedies
To support the CRC Committee in drafting its upcoming General Comment 27 on Access to Justice and Effective Remedies, an expert consultative meeting occurred on 18 May 2024 in Geneva with representatives of UN agencies, civil society, academics and people with lived experience to consolidate views, identify potential priorities to ensure full enjoyment of the right to identity, which is the gateway to other rights in the CRC. Specifically, this meeting highlighted the importance of ensuring that all children, especially the most vulnerable have a full and complete identity including nationality as an enabler for accessing justice. CRC Members supporting the meeting included Suzanne Aho, Hynd Ayoubi-Idrissi, Bragi Gudbrandsson, Philip Jaffé, Faith Marshall-Harris, Mikiko Otani, Luis Pedernera, Ann Skelton, Velina Todorova and Benoit Van Keirsbilck who thanked experts attending – representing all regions – especially those with lived experience for contributing to their understanding of the challenges faced with respecting Arts.7-8 CRC and identifying concrete solutions to improve access to justice.
