May 2026, Peru: Publication of CHIP Special Advisor’s thesis on the right to identity in adoption

Child Identity Protection is very pleased and congratulates Eda Aguilar, its Special Advisor and valued friend, for the conclusion and publication of her thesis on adoptive family attachment and the dynamic identity of adopted adolescents in Lima, Peru. The aim of this study is to explore the perceptions and insights of a group of adolescents from adoptive families, both in relation to their self-perception and to the significant interpersonal relationships that have shaped their life trajectories, including in the framework of their life story and significant relationships before the adoption process, resulting in an identity that is being built in relation to two families: one present and known, the other one absent or unknown. Thus, their identity construction takes shape through new attachments that arise throughout their lives. Within this framework, the central objective is to analyse how the adoptive family bond relates to the process of identity building, conceived as a dynamic dimension undergoing constant transformation during adolescence. The researcher considered it an ethical responsibility to ensure the participation of the adolescents themselves in order to deepen and contribute to a better understanding of what it means to be an adopted adolescent, thereby potentially leading to the development and implementation of professional tools which ensure respect for the story of adopted children and their identity building, reaffirming that identity, in its holistic and dynamic context, as a fundamental human right of every person.
